Course of Lectures in Mn English Stylistics

These lectures are meant as a course of lectures in Mn English Stylistics forming a part of the curricula of the Foreign Language Department in Universities.

The course of lectures makes no pretention to deal with the whole vast field of Mn English Stylistics and General Stylistics as well.

The aim of these lectures is more limited? Namely to assist the students in their study of fundamentals of MnE Stylistics and the fundamentals of the Theory of Translation.

The author of this course implies that Stylistics is a branch of linguistics which deals with two interdependent tasks: 1 - to investigate the inventory of special language media which secure the desirable effect of the utterance and 2 - to investigate certain types of texts which due to the choice and arrangement of language means are distinguished by the pragmatic aspect of the communication. Another implication is that language means contain neutral, expressive and stylistic devices.

Many problems in this course concern different branches of the Linguistic Science and General Theory of Translation.

I have tried to use standard definitions and accepted terminology with their Ukranian and Russian equivalents though it is not always easy because there are different conventions adopted in modern linguistic literature.

I have always considered Stylistics "a science in the making" which makes the task of a lecturer difficult - many problems are still unsettled.

The stem of the lectures is based on the course of lectures in MnEng Stylistics, General Linguistics and Translation delivered by professors at Moscow State Linguistic University for a number of years.

I am also indebted to various books and articles which are mentioned in the List of Material for Reference and also the authors quoted and referred to.

Stylistics Classification of the English Vocabulary Neutral, Common Literary and Common Colloquial Vocabulary. Special Literary Vocabulary, Special Colloquial Vocabulary.

Lecture 4.

Phonetic Expressive Means and Stylistic Devices. Onomatopoeia. Alliteration. Rhyme. Rhythm.

Lecture 5.

Lexical Expressive Means and Stylistic Devices. Intentional Mixing of the Stylistic Aspect of Words. Interaction of Different Types of Lexical Meaning: Metaphor, Metonymy, Irony.

Lecture 6.

Interaction of Primary and Derivative Logical Meanings. Stylistic Devices Based on Polysemantic Effect, Zeugma, Pun. Interaction of Logical and Emotive Meanings: Interjections and Exiamatory Words. Epithets. Oxymoron. Interaction of Logical and Nominal Meanings, Antonomasia.

Intensification of a Certain Feature of a Thing or Phenomenon: Simile. Periphrasis. Euphemism. Hyperbole.

Special Use of Set Expressions: Proverbs and Sayings. Epigrams. Quotations. Allusions. Clishis. Decomposition of Set Phrases.

Syntactical Expressive Means and Stylistic Devices. Sentence. Supra-Phrasal Units. The Paragraph.

Lecture 10.

Compositional Patterns of Syntactical Arrangement.

Stylistic Inversion. Detached Construction. Parallel Construction. Reversed Parallel Construction. Repetition. Enumeration. Climax. Gradation. Antithesis.
